The World Society for Protection of Animals (WSPA) and the Blue Paw Trust completed a survey of the dog population in Colombo in June / July 2007, in collaboration with the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC). It was conducted in advance of starting the comprehensive and humane program of dog population management in the city between these three partners.
This was in order to establish the status of the dog population at this time; and hence a baseline for the future evaluation of the program and for developing the detailed design of the program itself.
As Blue Paw Trust continues to work within the city of Colombo, it continues to conduct these population surveys to evaluate and monitor the progress of Colombo humane dog management program.
The survey consists of two related elements ; a direct obeservation and count of roaming dogs in the early morning hours, and a questionnaire of dog and non-dog owners.
This system has proven to be excellent in assessing the present work being conducted in Colombo.
