This concept is unique to Blue Paw Trust and has not been implemented in any other parts of the world. It is in experimental stages in Sri Lanka and the results are being monitored.
Dog Managed Zones (DMZ) will contain a limited number of animals who are sterilized and vaccinated and are generally healthy, thereby posing no risk to the public. The presence of these animals, due to their natural territorial behaviour, helps prevent unknown roaming animals from entering the premises. A dog managed zone is an area which is enclosed adequately and therefore restricts entry and exit of roaming dogs. The premises must be kept clean and free of garbage as another means of discouraging roaming dogs from utilizing the premises. The staff and public must be educated and kept informed of their role in creating an environment that is safe and nuisance-free for people as well as animals.
This is a great start to creating dog-friendly neighbourhoods where people and dogs can roam in harmony!
Blue Paw Trust is now supporting many organizations in creating dog managed zones. These are selected public and private locations, where known vaccinated, sterilized and healthy dogs, that pose no threat or nuisance live together with people.
The staff of these organizations are educated by BPT on how to create clean and attractive environments that includes dogs.
