Gateway College, Colombo 04 Celebrates “World Animal Day”

Children should be taught from an early age to be kind to the animals and treat them well. It is believed that children who are trained to extend kindness towards animals will become kind, considerate adults who are more humane with broader sympathies towards others and law abiding valuable citizens. With this in mind, “Kindness to Animals” was the theme projected by Gateway College, Colombo 04 to celebrate the “World Animal Day” on 4th October 2009. Animals, especially our pets play a major role in our lives when we are children and the programme for the day stressed on cruelty towards animals as well.

Shevanthi Jayasuriya from “Blue Paw Trust” fund did a presentation on how to be kind to animals and the importance of being safe around the animals, especially if it is not your own pet. Children enjoyed this session immensely and were very enthusiastic to ask questions from Aunty Shevanthi and share their experiences with her at the same time. Highlight of the presentation was when Shevanthi shared the story about “Pin-up Bawwa (dog)” called “Tanga” who lost his paws due to human cruelty at an early age and now lives with her. This story touched the hearts of everyone present and taught the children the importance of not being cruel to animals.

Children enjoyed the ‘mini’ pet show afterwards. The kids of Gateway College, Colombo 04 demonstrated their love for animals by donating essential items to The Animals’ Welfare and protection Association.
